Suffering from chronic migraines and dizziness can have a profoundly negative impact on your overall quality of life. It can affect your studies, your career and even your interpersonal relationships. If you experience chronic headaches and have not found treatment that works, it might be because you haven’t yet received the right diagnosis.
Vertical heterophoria (VH) is an eye misalignment condition that can cause migraines, dizziness and pain when you move your eyes, among many other symptoms. Here, we explain the connection between VH and migraines, and discuss our treatment process.
What’s Causing Your Headaches?
Do you experience frequent migraines or headaches that are centered around your eyes? Do you have facial pain, especially when moving your eyes? Have you sought treatment for your headaches and dizziness but have been unable to find a solution that provides lasting relief? If you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s time to consider VH.
VH is an binocular vision disorder that is caused by a vertical misalignment of your eyes. This misalignment could be due to a head injury you sustained recently or even many years ago—or it could just be the way you were born.
When your eyes aren’t aligned properly, they see two uneven images rather than one clear picture. Because your brain does not “allow” two images to be transmitted, it forces your extraocular muscles to correct the misalignment so that only one image is produced. This extra burden on your eye muscles causes them to become strained and fatigued, which leads to a number of uncomfortable symptoms.
Common symptoms of VH include:
-
Headaches centered around the eyes
-
Pain in the sinus area
-
Dizziness or vertigo
-
Trouble concentrating
-
Anxiety, especially in large, crowded spaces
-
Blurred or jumpy vision
-
Nausea
-
Clumsiness or general lack of coordination
-
Difficulty reading
How We Treat VH
At the Neuro Visual Center of New York, we have many years of experience providing eye strain treatment for our patients. In fact, our own Dr. Cheryl Israeloff Berger is one of a few doctors in the country who diagnoses and treat Vertical Heterophoria and other uncommon eye misalignment conditions.
To determine whether you are indeed suffering from an eye strain condition like VH, we’ll administer an in-depth, two-hour eye exam using our state-of-the-art equipment. This exam is unlike the standard eye exams you would receive from a typical eye doctor, who lacks the specialized skills and equipment needed to diagnose VH. With our equipment, we can detect the tiny misalignments in your eyes that signal an eye strain disorder.
We treat Vertical Heterophoria and similar conditions with special aligning lenses that enable your misaligned eyes to see images evenly—or “correctly.” This takes the burden away from your extraocular muscles, thereby reducing or even completely eliminating your headaches, dizziness and other VH-related symptoms.
