A certain percentage of both kids and adults with ADHD also experience binocular vision dysfunction (BVD). When you have a binocular vision dysfunction, your condition may not be easily diagnosed with a standard eye exam. BVD occurs when the eyes are misaligned.
Recognizing Binocular Vision Dysfunction Symptoms
BVD symptoms include:
- Dizziness or disorientation
- Headaches or migraines
- Light sensitivity
- Blurred vision
- Motion sickness or nausea
- Lightheadedness
- Anxiety in large spaces with high ceilings
Often those suffering from BVD are misdiagnosed as having a simple migraine disorder, sinus headache or vertigo, leaving BVD untreated. Blurred vision also creates “visual chaos” where patients find it difficult to orient themselves in surroundings. At the Neuro Visual Center of New York, we help patients by realigning their eyes using specialized realigning glasses.
How often and intensely a patient experiences the symptoms above can vary. It also can be triggered by movement such as:
- Head movement from side to side or up and down.
- Standing up from a seated or bent over position quickly.
- Driving around curves.
- Sitting in the passenger seat of a moving vehicle.
- Driving on the highway with vehicles speeding by on either side.
- Being in a large space with high ceilings such as an airport, supermarket or mall.
Some patients suffering BVD also are unsure when walking because they feel unbalanced and often drift to the side or walk into objects. These kinds of symptoms can be quickly remedied through the use of specialized prismatic lenses. We offer specialized prismatic lenses at our center to patients after diagnosis of BVD.
Recognizing BVD in Patients with ADHD
BVD is present in as many as 50% of children that have been with diagnosed with ADHD and other learning disabilities. When you have a binocular vision disorder, you feel tired when you read. You may see words blending together, which makes it hard to concentrate. You may also skip lines or see words swimming across the page, thus finding it hard to return to your place in reading. With such symptoms, children and adults quickly lose interest in reading and experience frustration, anger and bewilderment. Getting a proper diagnosis and evaluation like we offer at the Neuro Visual Center of New York can make a significant difference in the quality of life for that patient with ADHD. We can detect even tiny misalignments in the eye that are often missed by standard eye exams.
