If you’re in high school or college, you’ve got heavy vision demands on your eyes, from reading to computer usage to daily activities. Our world is very visual, and being comfortable and able to perform at your best does require the ability to process visual information quickly.
Don’t underestimate the importance of getting your eyes checked regularly for any abnormalities. It’s also vital to check your prescription if you wear glasses or contacts, and to properly address any eye strain or discomfort you experience.
Eye Problems? Get an Eye Exam by a Specialist
One of the most important and effective steps you can take to ensure the health of your eyes and your overall well-being is getting a good eye exam. If you experience discomfort such as headaches, dizziness or reading difficulties even after getting an eye exam, it is probably time to see a specialist.
At the Neuro Visual Center of New York, we help patients who experience eye strain and discomfort and have not been properly diagnosed. Double vision symptoms can often go undetected or misdiagnosed and can lead to intense eye strain and discomfort. At our center, you will receive effective eye strain treatment.
Binocular vision dysfunction symptoms include:
-
Headaches
-
Nausea
-
Double vision
-
Pain with eye movements in one or both eyes
-
Pain around the eyes, such as in the temples or eyebrows
-
Difficulty concentrating while reading
-
Skipping lines while reading
Diagnosing double vision requires careful examination by an experienced eye specialist. It is also helpful if you answer the following questions as well such as:
-
When did your double vision start?
-
Have you recently hit your head, fallen or been unconscious?
-
Were you in a car accident?
-
Is your double vision worse at the end of the day or when you’re tired?
-
Have you had any other symptoms besides double vision?
-
Do you tend to tilt your head to one side?
Maintain Good Eye Care Habits
It is also important to maintain good eye health habits. For example, reading on your cell phone in the dark before you go to bed may seem harmless, but over time you can strain and damage your eyes. Lighting is important, so be sure to read and conduct your studies in a well-lit environment.
Pay attention to your eyes. Do you feel eye strain or headaches or discomfort after concentrating for a period of time? Take a break. Get up and go for a walk. Do other physical activities that do not require a lot of visual concentration. It is advisable to take a break from sitting at a desk or behind a computer at least every two hours. It’s best to look away from your computer or book every 30 minutes to ensure that your eyes do not get tired.
If you wear contacts, it is important to take them out every day if they are reusable and not to reuse daily-use contacts. Avoid wearing contacts beyond their recommended duration (usually a maximum of 12 to 14 hours a day).
