As we get older, the little pleasures in life become more and more important to us, whether you love to run, sew, hike, dance, read or listen to music. As time goes on, these activities can increase in meaning and importance to us. I’m not sure if that’s because we realize life is too short, or we start finding the true meaning of our own individual happiness. Last week, I was privileged to be able to help a man find a way to enjoy reading again, his one true pleasure.
How Binocular Vision Problems are Overlooked
Many people who unknowingly suffer from binocular vision dysfunction go undiagnosed for years, especially if they have other health problems. This is because some doctors, instead of looking at the patient as a whole, only focus on one aspect of their health. This is unfortunate because all it takes is a few minutes of asking questions and patiently listening to patients to find out important information essential to their health. This particular gentleman has a host of health issues that were being cared for by multiple doctors, yet struggled to get the care he needed for his binocular vision difficulties. Not one eye doctor ever evaluated his fragile binocular system, and he ended up getting lost in the shuffle.
The gentleman first realized there was a problem when he started having problems reading. His eyes were struggling to work together; he was skipping lines, his eyes were going out of focus and he was understandably getting frustrated. No one else bothered to ask what he enjoyed most in life and if he was still able to pursue that activity. If we as doctors don’t ask about our patients’ needs, how can we ever heal them?
The Road to Healing
The good news is that this wonderful man found his way to me. I simply had to listen to his problems and needs, and then I was able to directly evaluate him, address his symptoms and treat his binocular vision dysfunction. He can now enjoy reading again … and that’s the true power of prism!
At the Neuro Visual Center of New York, our doctors listen to each patient’s problems and concerns before starting an evaluation. If you’re experiencing concerning symptoms such as headaches, migraines and dizziness, anxiety or double vision, you may be suffering from binocular vision dysfunction.
