I’ve been doing a lot of networking and research this week, and it amazes me that not one (and I literally mean not one) of the headache specialty clinics I’ve researched made any mention of vision on their websites. One would think, at minimum, that they would at least address basic focusing problems. But no, neither vision, nor focusing, nor binocular vision dysfunction are mentioned at all! Unfortunately, medicine in today’s world has become so segmented that the whole patient is no longer looked at, which is scary and sad.
Is Medication the Answer?
Many people may not be aware that headaches are one of the symptoms of a binocular vision disorder known as vertical heterophoria, which is caused by a misalignment of the eyes. Thus, they stick with their first instinct when it comes to their health, and go to their primary care physician for help in determining the cause of their frequent headaches. At this point, patients are often prescribed medication, and while this might work for some, medication isn’t always the answer. For some people, the headaches could be stemming from a problem with the eyes, which isn’t going to be corrected with medicine. That’s why it’s so important to investigate your condition thoroughly before starting on a vicious cycle of serious medication.
A lot of times, when medication fails to relieve the patient’s symptoms, they are then shunted off to a variety of different specialists. But what happens when those specialists can’t help either? The patient ends up feeling lost and hopeless, with no end to their sometimes debilitating symptoms in sight. If you’ve sought treatment for headaches and nothing seems to be helping, your headache could be originating from your eyes. If you think this may be the case for you, contact our team at the Neuro Visual Center of New York, and we’ll schedule you right away for a complete neurovisual examination.
