While a concussion is classified as a mild brain injury, don’t forget that “traumatic” is part of that description too. A traumatic brain injury (TBI) like a concussion – even a mild one – generally involves much more than a temporary headache. The side effects of such an injury can be complex and far-reaching. For example, a concussion can change the way the brain interprets visual signals, resulting in a variety of painful physical symptoms commonly referred to as post-concussive syndrome.
What Is Post-Concussive Syndrome?
Headaches and dizziness are two of the most common symptoms of post-concussive syndrome, and can last for weeks, months or even up to a year if not properly treated. Post concussive symptoms don’t always manifest right away; in many cases they can take anywhere from seven to 10 days to appear. Other symptoms of this condition include the following:
- Anxiety
- Fatigue
- Sleeping problems
- Irritability
- Light sensitivity
- Poor memory & concentration
Around 30% of those who suffer from these symptoms for three months or longer have unknowingly developed binocular vision dysfunction (BVD). Such was the case for Jessica, a patient at the Neuro Visual Center of New York.
Finding Relief from Constant Headaches
“I had my fourth concussion in December of 2015. I went to numerous doctors and couldn’t find anything to relieve my headaches. I heard about Dr. Cheryl and, after seeing so many doctors who couldn’t help, I was nervous to get my hopes up again. I am so happy I went to see her. She is so kind, patient and caring. After wearing the prism glasses she gave me, my headaches were gone, my eyes were less sensitive, and my balance improved. If you’re struggling and don’t know what to do next, see Dr. Cheryl. I wouldn’t be where I am today without her help.”
